Coaching for Children

The age spectrum is usually from 6-18. In some cases I have started kids off at an earlier age but then a parent will need to be actively involved.

I also coach beginners, improvers and adults who want to refine or practice a particular part of their game.

Sessions

I offer early bird sessions for anybody that needs a boost of adrenaline before they go to work or can only fit in tennis at this time. They start from 6-7 7-8 8-9 even earlier if a client is so inclined.

Weekday morning and afternoons

After school sessions from 16.00-17-00 | 17.00-18.00 | 18.00-19.00. After work sessions (court permitting) 18.00-19.00 | 19.00-20.00 Saturday mornings and some Sunday mornings.

There is flexibility in my schedule so all inquiries are welcome.

I am registered with the LTA and in the process of updating my qualification.

Thank-you for your enquiry re tennis instruction for your child.

Club House

To play any game-or even to take part in many non-sporting activities children need Co-ordination, Balance and Movement. To play net type games, children need to be able to 'receive' the ball, handle a racket well and hit the ball back over the net. These are the fundamentals that I specialise in thus helping a child reach their full sporting potential.

Each of my sessions consists of a series of warm-ups which include some light stretching and graduated speed work around the court. Beyond the warm-ups I explore a variety of progressional physical skills that are needed to play any sport; jumping, balance, co-ordination, throwing, catching as well as basic tennis skills. All these physical skills are blended into fun games and exercises. Each child is unique and as I get to know and identify your child's needs the lessons become more focused in those particular areas.

For children who have awareness of tennis and the fundamentals then the lessons will be focused around game-based teaching, drills and matches with the player put into different rallying situations with continued reinforcement on techniques for serves, return of serve, groundstrokes, volleys and overheads.

Children will rarely progress steadily but in peaks and troughs so I empathise with their journey and encourage them to not worry about doing things incorrectly but continue to help them explore their process without being judgemental or conditional.

Tennis Assessments

Before I can determine a child's ability I assess them in a one off lesson. This will explore your child's ability to maintain attention, understand simple instructions, cover general receiving skills, co-ordination, balance and movement and use of a racket. In addition to this I look for some passion for tennis and sports in general. This will give me the information I need to plan a structure for future lessons. I will supply the results of this either in an e-mail format or printed for your reference.

Helping your child's development

All parents are encouraged to take part in the teaching process if they have the time. I will also encourage you to continue this process beyond the realms of the tennis club. Playing in the park, garden, or on holiday. Any ball games, running activities or tennis will be beneficial thus re-enforcing the coaching.

Parents kept informed

If a parent cannot come to a session then after every session a parent will be kept informed by e-mail or by letter, reviewing what was covered in the session, their child's progress and any issues that may have arisen.
